2025 List of Car Seats Without Flame-Retardant Chemicals

In the last 5 years, we have witnessed an exciting evolution in car seat textiles and production. More and more manufacturers are investing in innovative fabrics and manufacturing processes that can pass NHTSA’s antiquated “flammability standard” without using flame-retardant chemicals.
To be clear, having a car seat that doesn’t ignite easily is obviously important but the federal flammability standard is more than 50 years old and is no longer relevant.
While there are many flame-retardant-free car seats to choose from right now, it’s still common practice for manufacturers to add flame-retardant chemicals to their seats in order to meet the flammability standard in FMVSS 302. The standard does not specifically require the use of FR chemicals, but they have been a cost-effective way for manufacturers to comply.
Currently, there are 11 car seat manufacturers offering seats with covers that they claim to be free of chemical flame-retardants. At the moment, Nuna is the only manufacturer that has committed to making every car seat model in their lineup free of chemical flame retardants. However, Chicco, UPPAbaby, Britax & Maxi-Cosi deserve kudos for making a big commitment to innovative new textiles that don’t require chemical treatments to pass the flammability standard.
Graco is finally launching their first FR-free car seat in 2025 and while that’s great news, they certainly have a lot of catching up to do. At the moment, neither Doona nor Baby Trend offer any seats without flame-retardant chemicals, which is unfortunate.
We’ve compiled a comprehensive list of current 2025 car seat models that are marketed as being “FR-free” and have grouped these products by type of car seat (infant, convertible, booster, etc.) to make it easier to find something in the category you are interested in.
Fashions marked with the ✳ symbol are UL GREENGUARD GOLD certified. GREENGUARD is a third-party governing body that tests and certifies materials. The UL GREENGUARD GOLD Certification Standard includes criteria for limiting emissions of more than 360 VOCs and total chemical emissions.
